Travel advice: holiday compensation; walking tours of Delhi; the best of Athens By Gill Charlton

Walking tours of Delhi

Tony Parker, Swindon

We are spending three nights in Delhi at the end of an escorted tour of Rajasthan. It will be our first visit to India, so we would like to find a guide to get under the skin of the city. Can you recommend someone?

Gill Charlton replies
Surekha Narain runs Delhi Metro Walks (www.delhimetrowalks.com) and is passionate about her birthplace. She can obtain access to the old city’s private mansions and parts of the Red Fort not open to the public, and has permission from Delhi University to visit the former Viceregal Lodge and Old Secretariat.

Willy Brickley, a reader who was stranded in the city during the ash cloud crisis, says Surekha “brings the city’s history alive with the help of old photographs and maps, introduces customers to delicious street food, and takes them to beautiful shops, not malls”.

At weekends Surekha organises two-hour walks for groups of 15-plus. Otherwise, all walks are private and tailor-made to suit.
