Both are an important UNESCO World Heritage site. There are 34 caves at Ellora dating from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD, The caves at Ajanta are all Buddhist, while the caves at Ellora are a mixture of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain. The most incomprehensible thing about the Ajanta and Ellora caves is that they were crafted by hand, with only a hammer and chisel. There are various cave complexes in India, but these are definitely the most spectacular. Isn’t this amazing? Is there another city in the world which is comparable? Is it Petra?

Shekhawati is a semi-arid historical region located in the northeast part of Rajasthan, India. Marwari merchants in the 17 to 19 century constructed grand havelis in the Shekhawati region. Steeped in wealth and affluence, these merchants got busy outdoing others in building more grand edifices – homes, temples, step wells which were richly decorated both inside and outside with painted murals. The havelis are noted for their frescos depicting mythological and historical themes. Located on the corridor through which trading caravans moved freely between Delhi and the ports of Gujarat, Shekhawati was a prosperous region in the 19th century. With their multiplying wealth, they went on erecting colleges, cenotaphs, grander and grander havelis and – finally, when nothing else could be thought of – ordered that the havelis be painted. Can these havelis be compared to the affluence and grandeur of the Chettinad mansions in the South of India? Also this gem of Shekhawati lies hidden enroute to Jaipur from Delhi- Can you let this bypass you?
